Titles About Cosmic Radiation
The advent of sensitive high-resolution observations of Cosmic Radiation and their successful interpretation in terms of the standard cosmological model has led to great confidence in this model’s reality. The prevailing attitude is that we now understand the Universe and need only work out the details. This title traces the development and successes of Lambda-CDM, and argues that this triumphalism may be premature. The model’s two major components, dark energy and dark matter, have the character of the pre-twentieth-century luminiferous aether. While there is astronomical evidence for these hypothetical fluids, their enigmatic properties call into question our assumptions of the universality of locally determined physical law.
In this companion volume to the two-part NOVA television special by the same title, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and astronomy writer Donald Goldsmith attempt to cram 14 billion years of history into 300 pages. The result is a surprising and engrossing title that far surpasses the droning tone of many astronomy texts. Starting with the Big Bang and ending with the search for extraterrestrial life, the authors synthesize the results of several scientific fields to present a cosmological consilience. Although several books are published each year that provide overviews of various branches of science, what’s different about this one is the accessible tone of the writing. Combining 21st-century astronomy, astrobiology, astrochemistry, and other disciplines, Origins is a fine guidebook with which to journey ‘back to the beginning of everything’.
A very good overview of quantum physics, one of the best ever written for lay readers, that was originally written in 1982, by physicist Heinz Pagels. The first part of the book deals with the history of the subject. The second part deals with material that was new in the early 1980s, including complex subjects like Bell’s Theorem. Unfortunately, Pagels died in a mountaineering accident in 1988, and there hasn’t been an update of the book, newer discoveries in physics since the 1980s, mainly string theory, is not covered here. Still, it’s a very good book that can be read by anyone, and it explains the core concepts of physics without resorting to complicated mathematics.
In the sixteenth century, Nicolaus Copernicus dared to go against the establishment by proposing that Earth rotates around the Sun. Having demoted Earth from its unique position in the cosmos to one of mediocrity, Copernicus set in motion a revolution in scientific thought. This perspective has influenced our thinking for centuries. However, recent evidence challenges the Copernican Principle, hinting that we do in fact live in a special place, at a special time, as the product of a chain of unlikely events. But can we be significant if the Sun is still just one of a billion trillion stars in the observable universe? And what if our universe is just one of a multitude of others — a single slice of an infinity of parallel realities?
A Wide-Ranging Investigation Of The Ecology Of Inner And Outer Space, The Role Of Chaos Theory In The Dynamics Of Human Creation, And The Rediscovery Of Traditional Wisdom By Three Of The Most Original Thinkers Of Our Time: The late psychedelic visionary and shamanologist Terence McKenna, acclaimed biologist and originator of the morphogenetic fields theory Rupert Sheldrake, and mathematician and chaos theory scientist Ralph Abraham explore the relationships between chaos and creativity and their connection to cosmic consciousness. Their observations call into question our current views of reality, morality, and the nature of life in the universe. The authors challenge the reader to the deepest levels of thought with wide-ranging investigations of the ecology of inner and outer space, the role of chaos in the dynamics of human creation, and the resacralization of the world. Among the provocative questions the authors raise are: Is Armageddon a self-fulfilling prophecy? Are we humans the imaginers or the imagined? Are the eternal laws of nature still evolving? What is the connection between physical light and the light of consciousness?
